Streaming live video from their studios, Romanian women are arguably the most sought after cam models in the world. They have a natural allure, a seductive quality that captivates viewers as they perform in themed rooms ranging from boudoirs to bathrooms. And their fluency in English allows them to connect with clients across the globe.
But despite their popularity, some cam girls are still being trafficked into this industry and forced to work for free. And the arrest of social media influencer Andrew Tate and his brother on charges of sex trafficking highlights just how much is at stake for those working as cam models.
Camming is an internet-based service where individuals – mostly women, but also men and couples – broadcast themselves in private chats. It’s a global phenomenon that generates an estimated $2-3bn annually and is thriving in Romania. Experts suggest the country has around 5,000 registered camming studios and employs up to 400,000 women. It has earned it the title “cam girl capital of the world”.
While some studios are run privately by former models, others are owned and operated by large corporations such as Bucharest’s Best Studios, which employs 70 sex cam models in three shifts, meaning there is always someone online. According to its website, the company provides the space, technology (computers, cameras and lights) and props (including costumes and sex toys) while the models are paid a percentage of their earnings.
The work can be lucrative, but it’s often difficult to balance with other obligations. Many of the cam girls work full-time, while some are students or mothers. They are often required to sign confidentiality agreements and agree not to reveal their face, name or contact details in public. But this isn’t foolproof and some studios have been accused of exploiting their models.

Aside from being paid a decent salary, the work offers camgirls a sense of security and autonomy that they can’t find at home or in a traditional job. Studio owners say they are increasingly trying to legitimise the business and move it away from the shadowy black market, paying taxes and using copyright contracts with models.
But some experts argue that the pull factors for many young women in Romania include poverty, high internet speeds and low employment, and that the push factors – including the lure of easy money and the glamour of the job – are even stronger.
For some, the work can be psychologically damaging as they spend 12 hours in front of a camera without seeing or touching their clients in person. But some claim they don’t do this to earn money; rather, they see it as a way to help people who need it.
